  • 1958 - The second of two New York shows by Jerry Lee Lewis is cancelled due to poor ticket sales, most likely a reaction to his marrying his 14-year-old cousin.
  • 1960 - Tommy Moore quit as the drummer for the Beatles to return to his job as a forklift driver.
  • 1962 - Pete Best played drums with the Beatles for the last time during the taping of the BBC's Here We Go.
  • 1964 - The Rolling Stones have a press conference in the middle of Michigan Avenue in Chicago. The police eventually show up to disperse the crowd.
  • 1964 - The Beatles are "ordered" to attend the Queen's Birthday Party.
  • 1966 - Word broke on European radio that Who lead singer Roger Daltrey had been killed in a car accident. The victim was Pete Townshend a few days earlier and he was hardly dead.
  • 1966 - Elvis Presley begins shooting his film Double Trouble.
  • 1968 - The recording of the Rolling Stones' album Begger's Banquet gets especially hot when fire breaks out at London's Olympic Studios.
  • 1976 - AC/DC opened their U.K. Lock Up Your Daughters tour in Glasgow, Scotland.
  • 1977 - Clash members Joe Strummer and Topper Headon were held in jail after they failed to appear in court over a graffiti charge.
  • 1979 - Chuck Berry pleads guilty to income tax evasion and is sentenced to four months in prison.
  • 1980 - Echo & the Bunnymen began their first U.K. tour in Bristol.
  • 1985 - Madonna ended her The Virgin Tour at Madison Square Garden in New York.
  • 1988 - The concert celebrating the 70's birthday of Nelson Mandella was held at Wembley Stadium in London. Performing were Whitney Houston, Phil Collins, Stevie Wonder, Dire Straits, George Michael, Eric Clapton, Tracy Chapman, UB40, Eurythmics and Simple Minds.

  • 2001 - Depeche Mode opened their Exciter Tour in Quebec City.
  • 2003 - Adam Ant was arrested for disrobing in a London cafe.
  • 2004 - Courtney Love surrendered to police and was charged with assault with a deadly weapon against a woman at her former manager's house.
  • 2005 - Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin was awarded the OBE and Queen's Brian May was given a CBE in the annual Queen's Birthday Honours. 
  • 2005 - Kelly Rowland announces on-stage that Destiny's Child will split up at the end of their current tour.
