• 1953 - Eddy Arnold and Colonel Tom Parker dissolved their management deal.
• 1955 - Alan Freed held his Labor Day concert at Brooklyn Paramount with Chuck Berry, the Moonglows, the Cadillacs, the Nutmegs and the Harptones.
• 1956 - Jimmy C. Newman became a member of the Grand Ole Opry.
• 1962 - Tommy Roe left his regular job at General Electric when Sheila hit number 1 and ABC Records offered him $5,000.
• 1965 - Connie Smith and Bob Luman became members of the Grand Ole Opry.
• 1970 - The band Genesis run an ad in Melody Maker for a drummer. Phil Collins answers it.
• 1971 - The Grateful Dead's former manager, Lenny Hart, was arrested after taking off with $70,000 that belonged to the band.
• 1978 - Teddy Pendergrass promoted his album Life is a Song Worth Singing by performing a show for women only.
• 1986 - 16-year-old Debbie Gibson signs with Atlantic Records.
• 1988 - The Human Rights Now! tour opened in London with Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Tracy Chapman and Youssu n'Dour.
• 1989 - Ozzy Osbourne was arrested for threatening to kill his wife, Sharon.
• 1995 - A grand opening concert for the opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is played by Jerry Lee Lewis, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan and others.
• 2001 - Clarence Clemmons' show at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ was interrupted when the club received a bomb threat. 
• 2002 - The home of Bjork was broken into while she was asleep in her room. Recording equipment was stolen.
• 2005 - A televised benefit concert for victims of Hurricane Katrina was marred when Kanye West stated "George Bush doesn't care about black people." 
• 2006 - Ron Isley was sentenced to three years in prison for tax fraud.
