• 1955 - Bill Haley & the Comets' Rock Around the Clock became the first rock album to make number 1.
• 1958 - Johnny Cash signed with Columbia Records.
• 1966 - Rod Allen of the Fortunes was injured when fans pulled him from the stage and into the crowd.
• 1967 - Jimi Hendrix played his sixth and last show opening for the Monkees after it became apparent that his style did not fit with the headliner's. 
• 1971 - Jim Morrison is buried in Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. 
• 1971 - Grand Funk became the second band to sell out Shea Stadium after the Beatles.
• 1972 - Paul McCartney and Wings played their first concert in Chateauvillon, France. It is Paul's first appearance on stage since 1966.
• 1974 - Crosby, Stills and Nash started their "reunion" tour in Seattle.
• 1977 - Elvis Costello became a full-time musician, quitting his job as a computer programmer with Elizabeth Arden Cosmetics.
• 1978 - The Rolling Stones jammed with Muddy Waters at a Chicago show.
• 1989 - The production manager for New Edition was charged with criminal homicide after shooting the security man for the support act after they ran over their allotted time.
• 1990 - The Rollings Stones cancel a show for the first time due to illness after Keith Richards realizes he has a septic finger.
• 1991 - Roy Acuff received the National Medal of Art from President George Bush.
• 1995 - The Grateful Dead performed their last concert with Jerry Garcia.
• 1998 - Waddy Wachtel and his wife are arrested for suspicion of owning child pornography.
• 1999 - A 25-mile stretch of highway in Indiana is renamed the Kenneth Babyface Edmonds Highway.
• 2001 - James Hetfield of Metalica checks into a rehab facility.
• 2001 - The Backstreet Boys stopped their Black & Blue World Tour so A.J. McLean could get treatment for depression and alcohol abuse.
• 2003 - Jack White is in a car accident giving him a compound fracture of his index finger.
• 2004 - David Bowie canceled a European Tour after undergoing emergency heart surgery.
• 2004 - Alan Jackson has part of Interstate 85 in his hometown of Newnan, GA designated as The Alan Jackson Highway.
• 2010 - Paul McCartney joined Ringo Starr on stage in New York to celebrate the drummer's 70th birthday.
