• 1940 - Billboard published their first record chart taking into account sales information from all record companies.
• 1954 - Elvis Presley, Scotty Moore and Bill Black made their live debut as the Blue Moon Boys on the back of a truck in Memphis.
• 1961 - The Beat Boys (later the Beatles) sign a contract with Bert Kaempfert to record in Germany.
• 1965 - Frank Sinatra's hands are imprinted in concrete at Mann's Chinese Theater in Los Angeles.
• 1967 - Jerry Lee Lewis opens his first U.K. tour since the scandal of marrying his 13-year-old cousin in 1958.
• 1968 - While appearing on the British TV show Dee Time, Jane Asher announced her engagement to Paul McCartney was off. The proclamation came as a surprise to Paul.
• 1974 - The first Knebworth Concert was held in England. Artists include the Doobie Brothers, the Allman Brothers and Van Morrison.
• 1974 - Joey Ramone became the lead singer of the Ramones.
• 1975 - Bruce Springsteen & the E-Street Band opened their Born to Run tour in Providence, RI. It was Steve Van Zandt's first live performance with the band.
