• 1968 - Keith Moon celebrated his birthday by driving a car into the pool at the Holiday Inn in Flint, MI.
• 1969 - The movie Alice's Restaurant, starring Arlo Guthrie, opened.
• 1974 - Traffic performed together for the last time at the Reading Festival in England.
• 1977 - Waylon Jennings was arrested for possession of cocaine.
• 1978 - Bruce Springsteen was on the cover of Rolling Stone in salute to the release of Darkness at the Edge of Town.
• 1979 - The Cars play before an estimated 500,000 in New York's Central Park.
• 1979 - B.B. King celebrated 30 years in show business by playing the Roxy in Los Angeles.
• 1981 - Mark David Chapman was sentenced to twenty years in jail for killing John Lennon.
• 1983 - Jerry Lee Lewis' fifth wife, Shawn Michelle Stevens, was found dead from a methadone overdose. They were married only three months.
• 1990 - Judas Priest were exonerated in a lawsuit by the families of two fans who committed suicide, saying they did it after hearing subliminal messages in the Stained Class album.
• 1990 - Sinead O'Connor says she will not perform at the Garden State Arts Center in New Jersey if the U.S. National Anthem is played before her show.
• 1994 - Dave Abruzzese left Pearl Jam.
• 1996 - Liam Gallagher sat in the audience during his band, Oasis', taping of MTV Unplugged. His brother Noel took on the vocals.
• 1998 - Ingrid Penderson announced she was the half-sister of John Lennon.
• 1999 - Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan left Oasis.
• 1999 - Elton John is sued over his song Can You Feel the Love Tonight. The songwriter for Glenn Medeiros' Listen to Your Heart contends that John's song is too similar.
• 2001 - The Backstreet Boys resumed their Black & White World Tour 2001 after stopping on July 9 for A.J. McLean to be treated for depression and alcohol abuse.
• 2010 - George Michael plead guilty to driving under the influence of drugs in an incident where he ran his car into the front of a photo shop.
