- 1956 - Elvis Presley developed his fear of flying when his flight from Amarillo to Nashville had engine trouble and had to make an emergency landing.
- 1956 - James Brown charted for the first time with Please, Please, Please.
- 1961 - Bob Dylan played his first professional show in New York, opening for John Lee Hooker.
- 1964 - The Beatles had 14 songs on the Billboard Hot 100.
- 1965 - The New Musical Express Poll Winners concert in London includes performances from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Tom Jones, Freddie and the Dreamers, The Animals, The Kinks, Herman’s Hermits, Moody Blues, Them, Cilla Black, The Seekers and Donovan.
- 1970 - Peter Green announced he was leaving Fleetwood Mac even though he finished out their current tour.
- 1970 - Paul McCartney announced that he would never again record with John Lennon.
- 1977 - Alice Cooper played what was, until that time, the largest crowd in Australian history. After the show he was arrested until he posted bond of just under $60,000, the amount that he was paid for a tour that he never did.
- 1980 - Alabama signed with RCA Records.
- 1986 - Time, a musical by Dave Clark, opened in London with Cliff Richard in the lead.
- 1990 - Elton John sang at the funeral of AIDS sufferer Ryan White.
- 1991 - Paula Abdul held a press conference to confirm that she, and not one of her backup singers, had sung on her album, Forever Your Girl.
- 1994 - The Seattle coroner ruled that Kurt Cobain's death was a suicide.
- 2002 - Kid Rock proposed to Pamela Anderson. She accepted.
- 2011 - Bob Dylan performed in Ho Chi Minh City, China. The Chinese government prohibits him from doing some of his most popular songs.
