• 1917 - The Dixie Jazz Band One Step by Nick LaRocca's Original Dixieland Jazz Band, credited with being the first jazz record, was released in the U.S.
• 1964 - Cilla Black tops the British singles chart with Anyone Who Had a Heart, capping off the first time all of the records in the top ten were by British artists.
• 1965 - During a Rolling Stones concert, a girl fell from the balcony but escaped serious injury when the crowd below broke her fall.
• 1971 - The country mecca, Gilley's Club, opened in Pasadena, TX.
• 1973 - During a show at New York's Max's Kansas City where Columbia Records was to announce the signing of Bruce Springsteen, the label boss, John Hammond, had a heart attack.
• 1976 - A figure of Elton John was unveiled at Madame Tussauds in London, the first rock figure made since the Beatles.
• 1983 - The Nashville Network (TNN) started broadcasting on cable.
• 1985 - We Are the World hit radio.
• 1985 - Randy Travis made his debut at the Grand Ole Opry.
• 1987 - The first five Beatles albums are released for the first time on CD.
• 1987 - Janet Jackson's album Control becomes the first by a female vocalist to contain five top ten hits.
• 1994 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that parodies were considered “fair use” of a composition and did not require permission from the original artist or songwriter.
• 2000 - Doug Stone was injured when he crashed his ultra-light plane near Nashville.
