• 1944 - The first jazz concert was held at New York's Metropolitan Opera House.  Appearing were Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, Artie Shaw, Roy Eldridge and Jack Teagarden.
• 1964 - The Beatles made their U.S. chart debut with I Want to Hold Your Hand. It started at number 45 and eventually went to number 1.
• 1965 - Barbra Streisand and Bobby Darin sang at Lyndon Johnson's inauguration.
• 1969 - Pete Best won a defamation suit against the Beatles.
• 1973 - The Rolling Stones raised $200,000 with a benefit for Nicaraguan earthquake victims. Mick Jagger donated another $150,000.
• 1974 - Paul Rodgers & Simon Kirke (Free), Mick Ralphs (Mott the Hoople) and Boz Burrell (King Crimson) formed Bad Company.
• 1978 - Neil Sedaka received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
• 1980 - Capricorn Records filed for bankruptcy.
• 1981 - Wendy O. Williams of the Plasmatics was arrested by Milwaukee police for simulating sex with a sledgehammer during the group's concert.
• 1984 - Van Halen opened their North American 1984 tour in Jacksonville, FL.
• 1989 - The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, Otis Redding and Dion were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Wonder was the youngest person ever inducted.
• 1991 - Three concert goers were killed during a show by AC/DC in Salt Lake City, UT.
• 1993 - Elton John resigned as director of the Watford Football Club.
• 2005 - Motown's Norman Whitfield was found guilty of failing to report over $2 million in royalty income and was sentenced to six months of house arrest and a $25,000 fine.
• 2008 - Four members of the paparazzi were arrested for reckless driving after chasing a car that contained Britney Spears.
